New York has felt more like Seattle over the last month with cooler temperatures, overcast skies and daily drizzles. However, it ended with an otherworldly display of light and clouds tonight that made me think strange weather can be worth it.
Such an amazing photo paper. Such a shame.

Photos from Stinky Bklyn's Cheese Eating festival...
The New York Photo Festival premiered in DUMBO this weekend, and I eagerly attended on my days off. The highlight was by far the VII seminar. VII is a photo agency created several years ago by some of the living legends in photojournalism today. Among the roster are James Nachtwey, Lauren Greenfield, Christopher Morris and Ron Haviv, all of whom spoke over the weekend. They've witnessed and documented virtually every major conflict and social crisis in the world over the last 25 years. Beyond the beauty and artistry of their work, their courageous efforts to gain access, relate untold stories and change the world are inspiring.
One of the photographers I was most exhilarated by was Joachim Ladefoged. I encourage everyone to go to his website and look at his body of work on Albanians during the Kosovo War (it's slow, but well worth the wait). In fact, look at everything on his website, but look at Albanians first. He is the master of layered compositions. You may be drawn to one part of the photograph initially, then suddenly realize there's something else equally if not more interesting going on just beyond that. Every piece of composition is there for a reason. I could study them for hours - it's like looking at four photographs in one.

This was my conversation tonight with my six year-old niece. She has a little chipmunk voice. This made my night.
